  • The Internet is full of movies, music, photos, available for download. So many goodies but so little storage space. The Drobo-4 is an enclosure that holds up to 4 of your hard drives for as much storage as you want, need, or can afford. As rich media (photos, video, movies, music) continues to devour your storage capacity, you need a solution that allows you to easily manage, protect, and scale storage for your PC or Mac. For you, there's Drobo, the first fully automated storage robot to take the pain out of keeping your important digital content safe. This Data Robotics DR04DD10 Drobo enclosure accepts up to 4 internal storage SATA hard-drives (drives are not included) that you set up as an array for both primary and backup storage. Add Drobo, get 4 drives and download at will. • Summary: Drobo 4 Drive...
  • Comment: I opened the box and popped 4 drives in it made volume I copied a lot of stuff to it and then one of the drives failed. Just like the product says all my data is still on my computer now I am just waiting for my RMA so I can put a new drive in and be protected once more. I do RAID for a living at work and at home I just wanted some thing simple like this so I did not have to think at all just plug and play and this is exactly what this is. I am getting ready to get my 2nd one.

  • Summary: A good RAID storage option
  • Comment: This is a review of the second DROBO that I have purchased, so I have a fair amount of experience with them over two years. It pretty much works as they advertise but you need to be aware of a few issues. First, it takes a LONG time to load one of these once you set it up, like 12-24 hours depending on what your dumping into it, and second, the set up often requires a few tries to get the set up software to work, just be patient and it will take. The DROBO software is not as smooth as your typical Mac OS software and can at times be a little baulky. With my first DROBO, I did have a failed drive and it tells you it has failed, so you pop out the failed drive and put in a new one, but until the new drive writes, and that take up to 12-18 hours, your data is NOT protected, so its a stressful 12 hours wondering if a second drive will fail. The new 5 bay DOBO's address this, but its a consideration with the 4 bay drives.

Generally speaking however, I think this is a good solution.

FYI, I am a photographer and use MAC OS 10.6 operating system.

  • Summary: AVOID!!! - Inferior Product does not deliver
  • Comment: Failed in less than a year. My hard drives function perfectly, but when the unit failed it rendered the data irrecoverable. Drobo's "solution" was to reformat the drives and purchase a new Drobo unit. This is not a solution and the product clearly is inferior, as it caused a problem with the disk pack. The icing on the cake was Drobo was not even going to offer a discount on the new drive.

I had to send off the disks to a data recovery service, which will cost THOUSANDS. Expensive lesson in the necessity of backing up, which is not drobo's fault. However, my overall satisfaction is zero as the product failed after 20 uses and rendered the disk pack unreadable. Who knows if it will protect against a drive failure as it only lasted 20 boot ups.

AVOID. There are better and CHEAPER solutions out there.

  • Summary: Junk Junk Junk
  • Comment: This thing is so unreliable, it's unbelievable. I have had 3 of these now sent to my by the manufacturer to replace the one I purchased, and I'm still having trouble. It has locked up my iMac multiple times and I have to reformat it almost constantly. It seems that if you use Firewire 800 with this drive, you cannot attach another firewire 800 device to it to daisychain. So, your Firewire 800 can ONLY be used by the Drobo. Technical support is very nice, but it takes so long to get them to make a decision, I have spent thousands of dollars of my time to debug their horrible product. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Now, I can't get my money back. I bought a $400.00 door stop.

  • Summary: Quality and support terrible
  • Comment: My Drobo stopped working within the first few months, and I called for tech support. First they misdiagnosed the problem, and then wanted another $69 to ship a replacement unit. There are many simpler, cheaper, and more reliable options. Not recommended.
